Being prepared for bushfires
This information can be found on the Queensland Government Rural Fire Service website.
When planning for bush fire season it is important to ensure that you remove excess combustible material (e.g. dry grass, dead leaves and branches) from your yard. You should move any flammable items such as wood piles, paper, boxes, crates and garden furniture well away from the house. Trim any low-lying branches and keep gutters clear of leaf litter.
You should ensure that all pumps, generators and water systems are working, and check that your first-aid kit is fully stocked. If the fire is approaching block drain pipes with gutter pugs and fill gutters with water. Turn on sprinklers in the garden and fill containers with water, including the bath, sinks, buckets and wheelie bins. It is a good idea to also soak towels and place under external doors. Make sure that you drink plenty of water and ensure that pets and livestock are prepared and safe.
If you have decided to stay and defend your home during a bushfire you should ensure that fire-fighting equipment is inside and nearby. Ensure that you patrol the property for fire spots and exhaust them as soon as possible. Keep an eye on the inside of your home as well making sure you check ceiling spaces for any small embers of fire.
Shelter inside and stay hydrated.
