How to manage a flood disaster.

Queensland governments “if its flooded forget it” campaign 29% of people said that they would risk driving through flood waters. This is a whopping statistic given the dangers of flood waters.

ABC emergency suggests that before a flood you should you should make preparations such as sandbagging your home and leaving your property to find safer ground. They suggest that you move everything to higher ground and ensure you have an emergency plan in place for food, pets and family members.

Along with your emergency kit, it is suggested that you pack warm clothing, essential medications, valuables, personal papers, mobile phone, photos and mementos in waterproof bags. If you can’t take your pets with you, decide how you will look after them. Raise any furniture, clothing and other valuables onto beds, tables and into roof spaces. Empty freezers and refrigerators, leaving doors open, and turn off power, water and gas. Lock your home and take the safest evacuation route out of the area. Don’t drive in water of unknown depth and current. It is always important to remember that walking through floodwater is very dangerous.
