Ways to manage an overdose

In a suspected overdose IMMEDIATELY contact (000) Triple 0.

This information is sourced directly from the Queensland health overdose fact sheet.

With illegal drugs so prevalent in society it is important to recognize someone who has overdosed and to know what to do to help them.

Some of the signs of an overdose include coma, nausea and vomiting, confusion and difficulty breathing.

If the person you suspect has overdose is unconscious – check the persons airways to ensure they are still breathing and ensure they still have a pulse. It is important to stay with the person until the ambulance arrives.

What not to do in these situations is equally important.

  • Do not try and make the person vomit
  • Do not give them any fluids.
  • You should also not try to give them CPR
  • Do not try and diagnose an overdose yourself
  • Always ring for help.

Ensure that you stay with them until other help arrives no matter how much they try and get away from you. People who have overdosed can often be a harm to themselves and others. Keep monitoring their behavior and if you see a decline in their state do not wait – get them to a hospital straight away.
